The Migrants' Counter to the GFMD is the IMA's challenge to the upcoming Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). It is part of the ongoing campaign being held by the IMA as it will conduct the International Assembly of Migrants and Refugees on October 28-30, 2008 as the migrants' alternative conference to the GFMD.

The Migrants' Counter shall lay down the real situation of migrants and refugees around the world. Cases of violations against migrants and refugees as well as current campaigns held by and for the sector will be featured here.
This is our real situation.

Migrants' bid to unionize contested
The British Columbia Agriculture Council, which represents the interests of the agriculture industry, questions the right of migrant workers to unionize under the B.C. Labour Relations Code.

The council argues that the code does not constitutionally apply to migrant workers, who come to Canada as part of a federal program that operates under the terms of agreements negotiated by Ottawa with the workers' home countries. (view link) --- Canada

Woolas gets tough on the immigrants by Paul Britton
IMMIGRATION is to be limited and employers will be told not to hire migrant workers to counter the effects of the credit crunch.

Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas, the government immigration minister, revealed the intended policies in a series of interviews about his new role.

He said continuing fears of rising unemployment had made the subject of immigration ‘extremely thorny’.

He added: "It’s been too easy to get into this country in the past and its going to get harder." (view link) --- Europe

New Zealand politician says immigrants must learn to use lavatories and showers
Opposition frontbencher Lockwood Smith said Pacific islanders had to be given guidance in using lavatories and showers, while Asian workers were better at some jobs because they had small hands.

The National party spokesman was forced to apologise for his remarks claiming they had been taken out of context.

The former minister had been tipped to become the country's next immigration if his party win power in the general election later this year. (view link) --- Asia Pacific
