Opposition frontbencher Lockwood Smith said Pacific islanders had to be given guidance in using lavatories and showers, while Asian workers were better at some jobs because they had small hands.
The National party spokesman was forced to apologise for his remarks claiming they had been taken out of context.

A thief raped an Indonesian maid in Manjung when he failed to get his hands on anything valuable.
He later tried to break into three other houses but only found a watch.
The thief found all the rooms in the first house locked, except for the maid’s door. (view link)

| Sri Lanka urged to save migrant workers on Saudi death row |

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has urged Sri Lanka to help three workers facing execution in Saudi Arabia saying the government should do more for migrant workers who earn foreign exchange.
They called on people in Sri Lanka and elsewhere to write to the Sri Lankan government about its obligations and the government of Saudi Arabia calling for clemency to be exercised. (view link)

A Filipino worker has been sentenced to die by firing squad in Taiwan for murder and robbery, a migrant workers’ group said on Thursday.
Migrante International identified the worker as Nemencia P. Armia, who was accused of robbing and killing a Taiwan national on the night of Sept. 12, 2007. (view link)

A militant group has urged the Philippine government to investigate the murder conviction of three overseas Filipino workers (OFW) for their involvement in what has become known as the Jeddah “chop-chop" killings two years ago.
“All we’re asking for is due process and proper legal counsel for them," Migrante International chairperson Connie Bragas-Regalado told GMANews.TV during a media briefing in Quezon City on Wednesday.
Bragas-Regaladao said the does not trust Saudi Arabia’s judicial system. (view link)

| Asia's migrant workers fear for jobs |

Thousands of migrant workers, among them maids, restaurant staff and laborers working in wealthy Asian cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong, are worried that an economic slowdown and retrenchments resulting from the crisis could hit their employers' pockets, and leave them without jobs.
This would mean that the flow of remittances they send home to their poor families will dry up -- and with it money for food, clothing and school fees. (view link)

Migrante International said the working group created bilaterally by the Philippines and Malaysian governments regarding the migration problems between the two countries is only on papers.
Migrante International together with Gabriela Rep Luzviminda Ilagan, and Atty. Clare Padilla of the National Union of People’s Lawyers and Engender Rights is conducting a Fact Finding Mission since October 2 and will end on October 6.

The group particularly criticized acting DFA Secretary Esteban Conejos, Jr. for literally waiting for the response of the UAE government before acting on the matter.
