Remittance charges. The Philippine government recently imposed a .15% documentary stamp tax on remittances to be sent by Filipino migrant workers back home. The remittance charges have also been imposed but there is no ceiling in the percentage that can be charged on those remitting.

Violence against women. Hazel, a Filipina cultural worker in Japan, was allegedly raped by American militarymen in Okinawa. The Japanese police dropped the charges due to insufficient evidence.

Government neglect
Government neglect. In Malaysia, the Bangladesh High Commission stopped giving travel permits to cheated Bangladeshi migrant workers without any valid reason. This led to the amassing of undocumented Bangladeshi workers in the country which makes them more vulnerable to abuse, violence and even death.

Crackdown on Undocumented Migrants in Korea. The South Korean government has become ruthless in its systematic crackdown on undocumented workers. Migrant workers are being nabbed on the streets, pregnant women and those in the hospitals are not spared.

Mandatory processing of contracts through agencies for Indonesian migrants. The Indonesian Consulate in Hong Kong recently announced that Indonesian domestic workers (IDWs) in Hong Kong have to undergo mandatory processing through recruitment agencies. Such a decision will only make the IDWs more vulnerable to overcharging by the agencies.

Mandatory psychiatric testing
Mandatory psychiatric testing. The Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippine government rashly concluded that most of the Filipina domestic workers who killed their employers had a history of mental illness. It is in this frame that they will require all migrant workers to undergo psychiatric testing.

Over the years Malaysia has carried out several major evictions of undocumented migrants and stateless people. Now, the Malaysian government has started a new major crackdown with thousands being arrested and deported across Sabah.

The Filipino migrants in Hong Kong made sure that they will get involved in challenging the GFMD.

In the recently concluded Third Filipino Migrant Workers Summit in Hong Kong University on August 31, 2008, the Filipino migrant leaders in Hong Kong discussed their current situations and struggles and how the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) only makes worse their state.

Around 400 participants from around 87 organizations, institutions and church groups joined the summit and made sure that their voices are heard in the united call to challenge the GFMD.
