Woolas gets tough on the immigrants by Paul Britton
IMMIGRATION is to be limited and employers will be told not to hire migrant workers to counter the effects of the credit crunch.

Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas, the government immigration minister, revealed the intended policies in a series of interviews about his new role.

He said continuing fears of rising unemployment had made the subject of immigration ‘extremely thorny’.

He added: "It’s been too easy to get into this country in the past and its going to get harder." (view link)

Anti-foreigner campaign boosts Austrian far-right
Populist far-right parties made sweeping gains in Austria's closely fought general election yesterday, making their strongest showing since 2000 when the country suffered EU sanctions after a far-right party won power for the first time since the Second World War.

The Freedom Party, led by Heinz-Christian Strache, gained more than 18 per cent of the vote – nearly doubling its share of support – after running a vitriolic campaign against "foreign criminals" and "asylum cheats" and pledging to take Austria out of the EU. (view link)

The GWU today called on the government to crack down on the exploitation of migrant workers and to introduce stiffer penalties on those employers who abuse.

GWU general secretary Tony Zarb told a press conference that migrant workers who were allowed to work should be offered the same conditions as Maltese and efforts should be made to integrate them.

He warned that inferior conditions, including inferior pay and inferior health and safety conditions, were wrong not only in the case of these workers, but also the Maltese workers. Cheap labour, he insisted, should not be allowed to rear its ugly head. (view link)

A list of stricter rules for admitting migrants to UK is expected to come into force in November.

Border and Immigration Minister Liam Byrne was quoted by BBC news saying "Our new Australian-style points system is flexible to meet the needs of British business while ensuring that only those we want and no more can come here to work. This tough new shortage occupation list supports that." (view link)

Political persecution of Onder Dolutas, a Turkist political refugee in UK
Onder Dolutas, a Turkish political refugee in the United Kingdom, was arrested and imprisoned in Germany while he was visiting a relative in May 23, 2008.

Because of his political views, he is politically persecuted by the Turkish government, the same reason that forced him to leave Turkey in 2001.

Dolutas was granted refugee status by the British authorities and later became a British passport holder. The Turkish government with the help of the German authorities, did not respect his status as a political refugee and as such, violated the 1951 Geneva Convention providing protection to political assylum seekers.

Crackdown on Undocumented Migrants
